ABOUT

What is RTRFM?

RTRFM is an independent, not-for-profit community radio station based in Perth. We broadcast 24/7 on the 92.1 frequency, on digital and streaming online at this website, every day of the year from our studios in Mt. Lawley.

CONTACT

How do I contact the studio?

You can call the studio direct 24 hours a day at (08) 9260 9210 or email studio@rtrfm.com.au.

How do I contact the RTRFM office?

Our office is open Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. You can reach us at (08) 9260 9200.

Where is the office located?

1st floor, 642 Beaufort Street, Mt Lawley, 6050 – just up the staircase.

What’s the RTRFM mailing address?

PO Box 842
Mount Lawley

PROGRAMMING

How can I listen to RTRFM?

You can tune in on your radio right now – we’re at 92.1 on the FM band. You can listen on digital radio at RTRFM, or you can stream online.

What kind of music does RTRFM play?

Everything! We play a tremendous amount of local music and a great number of our presenters are involved in Perth’s myriad local music scenes.

If you stay tuned to 92.1 for long enough, you’ll also hear Ethiopian throat singers, Italian dance-floor bangers, American smooth jazz standards and transcontinental otherworldly ambience right beside new tracks from Perth bands past and present.

How does RTRFM select what music it plays?

Unlike a lot of other commercial, community and public radio stations, RTRFM is not playlisted. What that means is the station does not dictate what songs should be played and when – instead we trust our presenters to play the most exciting and interesting music they’re unearthing.

Every week we run a local and RTRFM feature album alongside our Sound Selection which features 8-12 of the most exciting tracks to come through the station that week, as selected by the Music Coordinator.

Can I listen back to shows that have already aired?

Yes! All our shows are available for re-streaming shortly after broadcast. Our archive goes back four weeks. Head to an individual show page for a list of available broadcasts.

How can I find out what song was playing at 3:42am on Tuesday morning?

We use AmRap’s services for tracking our playlists. Head to the show page to find out what tracks were played during a program, or if in doubt, check out the program grid to see what shows are on air and when.

MUSICIANS, BANDS & AIRPLAY

How do I submit digital copies of my music?

We require a digital copy for all submissions. To submit your music digitally, email our Music Coordinator Will Backler (wbackler@rtrfm.com.au) and ensure your submissions includes the following:

A download link to your music that’s at least a 320kbps MP3 or a WAV file.
Note: please don’t attach your tracks / 10mb artwork to an email – this clogs up our servers. Upload your music to Dropbox, Soundcloud, Bandcamp or any other file downloading portal.

  • A streaming link in addition to a download – Soundcloud, Bandcamp or YouTube preferred
  • A bio, preferably in PDF format, so we know who you are
  • Any other relevant information like tours, shows, launches, so we can tell our listeners as much as we can about you
How do I submit physical copies of my music?

We love physical copies of albums and singles, but if you want to improve your chances of your music reaching the right presenters, we insist you also submit your music digitally so we can add it to our digital system.

If you’re a local band, you can pop into the office at 642 Beaufort Street, Mt. Lawley and drop off your music. Otherwise, send your CDs (4-5 copies is ideal) to our Music Coordinator:

Will Backler
PO Box 842
Mount Lawley
WA

How do I arrange an interview on RTRFM?

For an interview on Breakfast with Caitlin or music content anywhere on the RTRFM program grid, get in touch with Breakfast Presenter Caitlin Nienaber at cnienaber@rtrfm.com.au or our Music Coordinator Will Backler (wbackler@rtrfm.com.au) with the vital information – your band or event, a link to your music and info about your upcoming gig/release.

For an interview on The Mag or Artbeat, contact our Talks Producer Danae Gibson at dgibson@rtrfm.com.au.

How do I get feedback on my music?

Due to the high volume of music sent to RTRFM and the large amount of requests for feedback, we are not able to reply to every single person wanting specific and detailed info on why their music may or may not be played on air.

Please feel free to contact individual presenters via our presenter contact list, however the music coordinator may be unable to assist you with further details.

How do I send music to specific presenters?

Contact our Music Coordintor Will Backler, or send in a physical copy, addressed to the show or presenter you would like to give the CD to.

How do I get my gig listed in the on-air gig guide?

Email gigs@rtrfm.com.au with the name of your gig (if relevant), the lineup, the venue and the date. We need at least 7 days notice to list your show in the gig guide.

Can I play In the Pines / Fremantle Winter Music Festival / the Radiothon Party?

Maybe! Get in touch with our Events & Operations Co-ordinator Chris Wheeldon at cwheeldon@rtrfm.com.au. Send all the things you’d naturally send to someone booking a gig – a little info about your band, a link to your music and links to your social media profiles. We put on heaps of events every year and we’re always on the lookout for the best bands in Perth to play our gigs.

SUBSCRIPTIONS

What is an RTRFM subscription?

Our lifeblood! Like other community radio stations – RRR in Melbourne, FBi in Sydney, 4ZZZ in Brisbane – our biggest financial support comes from our listeners in the form of yearly subscriptions.

Our big yearly subscription drive is Radiothon which runs every August, but you can subscribe to RTRFM year-round. Head to the subscription page for more info.

Why should I subscribe?

If you love RTRFM and you want to get involved, a subscription is the best way to support the station. We make it worth your while – an RTRFM subscription grants you discounted entry to all our events (or free entry if you’re a gold/platinum subscriber!), eligibility for on-air giveaways, discounts from our business sponsors and heaps more.

Can I get a subscription for my band / business / family?

Yes! We offer a whole heap of different subscriptions, including Band, Concession, Family, Platinum & Gold packages.

I’ve moved house / changed phone number – how do I update my subscriber details?

Email Chris Wheeldon (cwheeldon@rtrfm.com.au) to update your subscriber details.

SPONSORSHIP

How can I promote my band / festival / gig through RTRFM?

We offer a slew of sponsorship packages for businesses, events, bands and campaigns which include on-air spots, giveaways, banner ads, event sponsorship and more. For more info, check out the Sponsorship page or get in touch with our Development Managers:

GET INVOLVED

How do I become a presenter on RTRFM?

All prospective RTRFM presenters are required to undergo our radio training course which runs year-round. For more info, head to the Radio Training section of our website.

How can I support RTRFM?

By listening! That’s the first step. If you’re already tuning in, thank you!

If you’d like to help us stay on air (it costs a lot to run a radio station!), you can consider:

  • becoming an RTRFM subscriber, which entitles you to a number of benefits including business discounts, discounted entry to RTRFM gigs and eligibility for giveaways
  • become a monthly donor, which entitles you to feel great about yourself for supporting community radio in Perth
  • attend our gigs – we put around 12 gigs a year, including In the Pines, Fremantle Winter Music Festival, the RTRFM Quiz Night, the Radiothon Party, Courtyard Club and a slew of one-off shows covering a range of genres and styles
  • buy some merch – we’ve got heaps of RTRFM swag, including T-shirts, mugs, stubbie holders & posters
How can I volunteer at the RTRFM office and events?

We’re always looking for more hands-on-deck, be it in the office or at our events – we couldn’t put on gigs like In the Pines without the help of our volunteers. If you’re interested, email our Operations & Coordinator Chris Wheeldon at cwheeldon@rtrfm.com.au and tell us how you’d like to get involved.

Does RTRFM accept work experience students?

Yes – get in touch with our Operations Coordinator Chris Wheeldon at cwheeldon@rtrfm.com.au to talk about a placement.
