Presenting: Indymedia

I am an animal rights activist and also get involved in human rights and environmental issues. I co-host a podcast that covers all of these issues.  I also teach on social movements and social change in Sociology and Anthropology and have a PhD in Sociology, which explored the animal rights movement.

Beyond activism and uni, I like to play ice-hockey, travel and spend time with my girlfriend and my dog.

How did you become involved in the station?

I recorded some music and comedy from the event Occupy Art Lab, which involved artists who supported the Occupy movement. I played some of these recordings on the podcast I co-host with my partner – Progressive Podcast Australia. This included a song from Ray’s band Zeks – Ray is another Indymedia host. Ray heard the podcast and invited us to come down and get involved with Indymedia on RTR.

If stuck on Mars, what five albums could you not go without?

  • The Broadways ‘Broken Star’
  • Propagandhi ‘Less Talk, More Rock’
  • Dead Prez ‘Let’s Get Free’
  • Have Heart ‘The Things We Carry’
  • Leftover Crack ‘Fuck World Trade’

What is the best thing about being involved in the station?

Getting to speak to heaps of great activists and others striving for positive social change.

What is the strangest thing that has happened to you at RTRFM?

Doing a whole interview and then realising it hadn’t recorded – maybe not strange but very annoying!

If you could present a show other than your own, which would it be and why?

Understorey because I’m really interested in environmental issues.

What do you do in real life?

Teaching sociology, podcasting, ice-hockey, animal rights activism.
