Facebook global markets director, Randi Zuckerberg, has announced that the social networking site plans to sell the personal information of its 150 million members to implement the new market research tool, Engagement Ads.

This is a polling system that targets individual users by their personal information such as their marital status, including whether they’re gay or straight.

The program has already been sold to the global graduate recruitment company CareerBuilder and the USA telecom giant, AT&T.

And Facebook plans to sell the online tool to other companies in the future.

Jamie Macdonald spoke to Curtin University Lecturer in Internet Studies, Dr. Tama Leaver.
