Basia Bulat - Heart of My Own
- Author
- Andrew Snelling
They say ‘never judge a book by its cover’…
But, if I’m honest, and I’m sure I owe it to a record as honest and earnest as this one, I had never heard of Canadian, Basia Bulat, and that’s exactly what I did. Looking at the cover of Heart Of My Own with its grainy photo of Basia standing on a quaint country road I thought, ‘looks kind of like it might be a Björk/Sigur Rós kind of feel’… more »

Tiny Vipers - Life on Earth 2009
- Author
- Cat Hope
Sub Pop thru Stomp
Tiny Vipers is Jesy Fortino, and Life on Earth is her second album, following on from 2007’s Hands Across the Void, which had a more American feel – not unlike the early Bruce Springsteen classic, Nebraska. What we have on this album is a more delicate and transparent songwriter, characteristics also evident in the simple but beautiful production of her songs on this release… more »

Luka Bloom - Eleven Songs
- Author
- Misty Farquar
I would hate to ever say that I thought an album was bad, so I won’t. What I WILL say though, is “meh…”
Luka Bloom’s “Eleven Songs” is not a great album, but it’s not terrible either. It’s got some really beautiful guitar work and orchestral pieces throughout, but none of the tracks are particularly outstanding in any other way… more »

The Dutchess and the Duke - She's the Dutchess, He’s the Duke
- Show
- Morning Magazine
- Presenter
- Shannon Fox
Imagine yourself sitting in a circle of barefoot bohemians, one strumming a guitar, the rest clapping and singing along… That’s “She’s the Dutchess, He’s the Duke”.
Sitting firmly in the sixties, The Dutchess and The Duke are reminiscent of Peter, Paul and Mary and wouldn’t have been amiss at the Newport Folk Festival alongside Joan Baez, Bob Dylan and Donovan… more »

The Maple Trail - Dirty Echo Spark
- Author
- Cam Stewart
Dirty Echo Spark has a rustic charm that grows like mould on cheese. This is not a fashionable release – not overtly catchy, lyrics that don’t make mention of tits or ass, and, despite the mandolins, violins and pianos, a distinct lack of synthesiser. In fact, I doubt that Aidan Roberts, the man behind The Maple Trail, owns even one fluoro/patterned shirt. What this is – a masterpiece in home recording, crystal proof that neither big money nor big name production is required to make beautiful and innovative music. Singer, songwriter, instrumentalist and producer Roberts should open his own studio. The sounds he pulls from his lounge room are enough to make The Kinks jealous. more »
