‘No Gays Allowed’ in Northern Ireland

The addition of a controversial ‘anti-gay’ clause to new equality laws being introduced in Northern Ireland has alarmed a New York based equality organization.

The new laws, tabled in Parliament by the influential Democratic Unionist Party of Northern Ireland exempts people with “strongly held” religious convictions from being prosecuted under equality laws.

Essentially, it will allow them to discriminate against gay, lesbian, bi-sexual or transgender individuals, potentially giving them the right to refuse a gay couple the rental of a home or a meal at a restaurant. Groups within Ireland and the greater United Kingdom have called out the party on the clause included in the law but, is it too late?

Can these sorts of laws actually be passed in a modern lawful environment? Do they have merit? Could something like this happen in Australia?

To weigh in on the discussion, lecturer of law from UWA with an expertise in law and religion. Dr. Renae Barker spoke with Tanya about the issue…
