A Broader Perspective: Timor Leste, a youthful population in a young democracy

Thursday 24th May / presented by Rewi Lyall

Rewi Lyall spoke with Professor Damian Kingsbury of Deakin University and Associate Professor Udoy Saikia of Flinders University about Timor Leste's political, demographic and economic challenges.
Professor Kingsbury led a 48-member observer mission to oversee the Timor Leste election on 12 May, and spoke with the Mag about that mission, the context for the election and its result.
Associate Professor Saikia spoke with us about his research into Timor Leste's population bubble of under-35s and the 'demographic window of opportunity' the government now has to radically shift well-being in a country ranked 133 in global development standards.
