ASKAP hears Fast Radio Bursts

Thursday 25th May / presented by Chris Mason

Since the first discovery ten years ago, astronomers have been perplexed by strange, rare, radio bursts lasting mere milliseconds.

Though we know they come from beyond our own galaxy, little more is known about fast radio bursts.

Theories regarding where they come from range from the extraterrestrial to exploding stars.

Hopes are held that learning more about their origins could help science locate dark matter, or even find out the weight of the universe.

Now, after just four days of searching, the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) radio telescope in Western Australia has detected a fast radio burst.

Dr Jean-Pierre Macquart from Curtin University discussed the discovery with The Mag.
