Asylum Seeker Letters Withheld

Wednesday 11th March / presented by Tanya Bunter

Last year, prominent lawyer Julian Burnside QC organised almost 2000 letters from Australians to be sent to detainees on Nauru, each containing a self-addressed envelope for the detainees to reply if they wished.

The letters were designed as a show of support for those that may have felt they’d been forgotten.

After receiving no replies, Burnside contacted the Department of Immigration and Border Protection and was assured the letters had arrived and distributed to the detainees.

After several more months with no response, Burnside received three large boxes of letters. The letters were unopened and marked return to sender. So why was Mr Burnside told the letters had been distributed when they were not?

And why weren’t they delivered to the detainees?

Julian Burnside QC joined Tanya for a chat about the letter.
