“Bran Nue Dae” Writer Passes Away

Wednesday 28th June / presented by Em Burrows

The Indigenous playwright who penned acclaimed Australian play ‘Bran Nue Dae’ has died.

The man, who is not named for cultural reasons, passed away in a Broome hospital yesterday afternoon aged 69.

He was awarded the WA Premier's special book award for Bran Nue Dae in 1991 with the play adapted into a film in 2009 starring Jessica Mauboy and Rocky Mackenzie.

He was made a WA State Living Treasure in 2004 recognising him as a creator of landmark Indigenous theatre and as an ambassador for the cultural diversity of Broome.

Former Artistic Director of Black Swan Theatre, Andrew Ross, joined Em Burrows to talk about this marvellous individual and what Bran Nue Dae means for the Indigenous community.
