Crisis in Syria

Tuesday 2nd September / presented by Jane Hebiton

The crisis in Syria has escalated, with more than 10 million people now in dire need of humanitarian aid.

3 million are refugees, more than the population of Perth, making it one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes in decades.

22,000 Australians have signed a petition created by Oxfam calling on the Australian Government to give an extra $70 million in assistance.

This would increase Australia’s funding to $100 million this year, well within the Government’s existing aid program budget – though you may recall that overseas aid is set to drop if the Government pushes its budget through.

Oxfam Australia Humanitarian Program Coordinator, Richard Simpson joined Jane.
