FITTER | HAPPIER: Meningococcal

Thursday 27th July / presented by Chris Mason

Over the past year the life threatening illness Meningococcal has made a return in WA.

This disease is an uncommon, life threatening illness that is caused by bacterial infection of the blood that lines the spinal cord and brain.

After decreasing from 86 cases in year 2000 to 16 cases in 2013, there's been a spike last year with 23 cases being reported, and already 14 cases in 2017.

To help combat it, this year a free vaccine program has been launched for young people aged 15-19 years.

Joining Chris on The Mag this morning, Professor Paul Effler explained more about the new program.
