Increasing the Dole

Ahead of next weeks budget, church, community and union groups are calling for an increase in unemployment benefits by $50 a week.

With current inflation rates at 2.5%, and benefits only $35 a day, the coalition of concerned community groups says the dole is too low for job seekers to live with dignity.

Australian Youth Affairs Coalition says the dole is so low it’s difficult for job seekers to look presentable for interviews, and after consistently being turned away, the motivation to continue to look for work becomes a struggle.

Director of the Welfare Rights Centre and President of the National Welfare Rights Network Maree O’Halloran spoke with Andy Snelling…
