International Day to Defend Amina
In a protest against the continued oppression of women, 19 year old Tunisian Amina Namazie posted a topless photo of herself bearing the slogan “my body belongs to me, and is not the source of anyone’s honour” on Facebook.
Her actions have resulted in death threats, from others and from her own family.
And she’s been placed in a psychiatric institution against her will by her family.
Tunisia is the Arab world’s first democracy but Amina shows us women are still oppressed.
Today is the International Day to Defend Amina, encouraging groups to support and mimic Amina’s actions.
