Lawrence English’s Cruel Optimism

Tuesday 14th February / posted by Oliver Laing

Brisbane-based composer Lawrence English has been releasing challenging, though-provoking explorations of sound for over 15 years, both under his own name and through his label, Room40.

His new record, Cruel Optimism, draws on the present Western political climate, and notions of language, trauma and their subtle influence on our culture, thought and memory.

Lawrence spoke with Oliver Laing on Drivetime and started off by discussing the origins of the album’s title.
