Mbira Masters

Friday 4th November / presented by James Hall

Garikayi and Tinashe Tirikoti are father and son masters of the Zimbabwean Mbira – or thumb piano.

They are performing as part of the Mbira Project with their first show as part of the Fremantle Festival on the 4th of November.

The performances will include the polyrhythmic sounds of Mbira music coupled with personal insights into Zimbabwean culture and spirituality.

Garikayi and Tinashe will also be facilitating a series of workshops with the aim of culminating in a performance of the Mbira orchestra.

The idea is to bring together local community members and musicians from African and non-African backgrounds to explore and develop their musical skills.

They joined Artbeat to share some of their insight and play a sample of Mbira.
