Meeting of Musical Minds

Tuesday 24th February / presented by Graeme Watson

The grass roots movement to address the dwindling number of live music venues in Perth is gaining momentum.

Hundreds of people attended a meeting at soon-to-be-closed Northbridge venue The Bakery to discuss what organiser Dave Cutbush has called “the sickness of the local music scene”.

The meeting culminated the groundswell of concern whipped up last week by the announcement that Deville’s Pad would close. Deville’s is the latest in a string of music and arts venues to shut its doors over the past 12 months.

Debate ranged from the pressures facing venues, to the need for public funding to establish a new medium-capacity venue.

The Minister for Culture and the Arts, John Day, has tentatively backed the movement. He said he was happy to investigate the ideas raised at the meeting, but stopped short of supporting calls for a publicly funded venue.

RTRFM’s General Manager, Jason Cleary, and RTRFM’s Music Director, Adam Christou, attended the meeting and report back.
