Metadata Rentention Ruled Out By Journalists

Wednesday 18th March / presented by Daniel Cleary

The Government’s proposed metadata retention laws has attracted criticism ever since they were announced, but particularly from journalists, who view the laws as contravening and essential part of journalistic practice – protecting a source.

The coalition offered to amend the bill so that agencies wanting to access a journalist’s records to expose a confidential source would be required to provide a warrant, a move criticised by crossbench senators and the journalists union.

With the Government pushing to get the laws passed by the end of the week, Greens Senator for WA Scott Ludlam is concerned the Government doesn’t understand the fundamental ethical obligation a journalist has to never reveal the identity of a confidential source.
