Operation Farce

Monday 31st August / presented by Chris Wheeldon

It all started from a press release from the Australian Border Force; a press release that indicated that The ABF will speak “with any individual we cross paths with” and warning officers will be checking people’s visa details. Those officers were to be a combination of ABF Agents, Victorian Police, Merto Offices and the Taxi Service Commision and would focus on the Melbourne CBD. T

That was a 10:14am on Friday August 28th, by 12:54 the ABF began to receive a number of complaints and seeked to clarify their position, by 2pm protests had began and by 2:26pm the operation was cancelled.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has since declared the operation a mistake and claimed the press release was poorly worded and no one will ever be stopped to show their visa on Australian streets. So was just a poorly thought through idea? A poorly worded press relase? Or something more?

To discuss Chris Wheeldon was joined by the Director of the Human Rights Law Centre Hugh De Kretser.
