Dredging & Dumping on the Great Barrier Reef

A group of scientists has petitioned the federal government to reconsider moves to allow dredging and other industrial activities within the protected Great Barrier Reef.

The 233 experts say acidity, dredging and shipping have reduced the size of the reef by 50% over the last 30 years, and further dredging and dumping will be environmentally destructive.

Authorities want to expand the Abbot point coal terminal and a decision’s due tomorrow.
