The View From Here #7: Peter Bibby and His Bottles of Confidence

Tuesday 5th May / posted by Apple Bagios

Peter Bibby and His Bottles of Confidence are the latest Western Australian act to feature in RTRFM’s twelve-part short film series, The View From Here.

The Perth singer-songwriter, now Melbourne-based, took to the RTRFM office flanked by His Bottles of Confidence, to perform five songs live for The View From Here‘s seventh episode.

Bibby and band – which features Pond’s Nicholas Allbrook on drums, Lyndon Blue on violin (Leafy Suburbs, Heathcote Blue) and Johnny Baird on bass – ambled through a set that included tracks from his 2014 debut album, Butcher / Hairstylist / Beautician.

He’s been described as ‘a naughty bastard with a heart of gold and a voice of rotting grapes’, and indeed, Bibby is a unique personality. His unmistakable rasp delivers cleverly penned lyrics that pull on the heartstrings, telling tales of boozing, youthful stupidity, the small pleasures and the minutiae of modern life.

Accented by soaring violin, Bibby and the Bottles ramshackle alt-folk meets Australiana sound is a disarming combination of rawness, sincere emotion and self-deprecation.

Bibby’s 2014 debut album Butcher / Hairstylist / Beautician (released through Fremantle label Spinning Top) was featured on many ‘best of 2014’ lists, while 2015 saw him join the feted Laneway Festival national line-up.
