Understorey: Acting on Waste in WA

Wednesday 30th August / presented by Elizabeth PO’ Adrian Glamorgan

The Western Australian approach to waste disposal has failed, with our state achieving the lowest level of recycling across the land.  But there is legislation already available to guide us.  The well-named Waste Hierarchy approach, favoured by environmentalists and written into state government law, points to addressing waste from its origins: by refusing unnecessary packaging; reusing what we have; and continuously recycling to keep materials productive. Then, and only after that, should the state consider incineration (sometimes called waste-to-energy) options.  With a new Labor government promising action in a couple of years time, Understorey speaks to Robin Chapple, Greens MLC for the Mining and Pastoral Region, and Sarah English, community engagement manager at the Conservation Council of WA, to find out about their practical solutions for acting waste in Western Australia to mitigate the damaging effects is having on our environment.
