Understorey: Digging Deeper than 20cm

Wednesday 23rd September / presented by Elizabeth PO’ Adrian Glamorgan

Using a re-definition of “sacred sites” provided by a helpful State Solicitor’s Office, the Department of Aboriginal Affairs Cultural Material Committee went ahead and deregistered the Burrup Peninsula, with its Ice Age petroglyphs, James Price Point, the Port Hedland harbour and many other sites that were coincidentally getting in the way of state development.  But then on April Fool’s Day this year  the Supreme Court  pointed out that their re-definition of sacred site just wasn’t legal.

How has the Department been coping? With cultural anthropologist Dr Stephen Bennetts, Understorey digs deeper than 20 cm to discover the Committee’s latest deregistration, the Beeliar Wetlands archeological site, paving the way for Roe 8, and much much more.
