Understorey: Microbeasties, Mining and Culture

Wednesday 10th August / presented by Elizabeth PO’ Adrian Glamorgan

There was cautious celebration last week when the Environmental Protection Authority of WA decided not to approve uranium mining at Yeelirrie, near Wiluna in the Northern Goldfields. There are many reasons why a mine may not go ahead, with public comment highlighting some especially unpleasant dangers.  But closer examination of the state EPA’s decision reveals that most of these concerns have been brushed aside.

The EPA has just one chief concern: microbial stygofauna.  Many wonder whether the EPA has otherwise dismissed significant objections, and also erased from the public record many Aboriginal community concerns about health, ecological contamination and social concerns. Understorey speaks to Dave Sweeney (Australian Conservation Foundation), Marcus Atkinson (Walkatjurra Walkabout) and Kerri Ann Garlick (Footprints for Peace) – all having been recently in Martu country on the Karlamalyi Walk near the proposed Kintyre mine.
