Understorey: Peace Boat Hibakusha Project

Wednesday 2nd August / presented by Elizabeth PO’ Adrian Glamorgan

Peace Boat is coming to Western Australia.   In January 2018 we will be visited by a number of hibakusha (nuclear survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki), who plough the global seas on board a chartered ship, sharing their unique first hand stories of the inhumanity of atomic weapons.  The hibakusha dream is for humanity to be forever free of nuclear weapons – and it might yet be possible in their lifetime.  Understorey speaks to Peace Boat’s Akira Kawasaki in Yokohama, Japan, to find out how  nuclear-free countries and community groups (like the International Red Cross) have managed in a few short years to achieve what nuclear weapons states have fumbled for several decades – to create a treaty to ban nuclear weapons. Surprisingly, both Japan and Australia are declining to sign the new comprehensive treaty.
