Understorey: Uranium Mines not Finally Approved

Wednesday 29th March / posted by Elizabeth PO’ Adrian Glamorgan

The Minister for Mines Bill Johnston is being badly advised, says freshly elected Greens MLC Robin Chapple, whose analysis is reinforced by Nuclear-free campaigner Mia Pepper.  Understorey walks through approval processes still pending for four uranium mines in Western Australia.  Until these approvals and permits are satisfied, environmentalists say, and defects in the environmental vetting process under the last government rectified, WA is a long way away from any final approval allowing four mines to slip through Labor’s new uranium ban. But if approvals are granted, there are also serious questions about bonds and mine rehabilitation that must be answered if the environment is to be protected, they say.
