A new report into 12 to17 year olds with autism has found many are struggling with bullying and have mental health issues.

Less than half of those surveyed said they had good friends, and despite optimism about their future from the children themselves, parents were found to be less confident.

It marks the first time adolescents with autism, along with parents, have been directly surveyed in a study of this scale, and build on from an earlier study from 2011.

The Director of Autism Spectrum Australia, Australia’s largest not-for-profit provider of autism services, Dr Debra Costley says that when combined, the research showed adolescence was defined by interrupted school pathways, relentless bullying and discrimination, and unmet education needs, which meant most adults were highly unlikely to find employment.
