Your Vote Counts! (When It Isn’t Lost).

Wednesday 20th November / presented by Daniel Midgley

The Australian Electoral Commission declared the 2013 WA Senate election null and void, which meant that West Australians would have to return to the polling booths and possibly endure another election campaign that would cost ‘more than $11 million to produce a less democratic result’ according to Liberal Party State Director Ben Morton.

Confusion reigned after the AEC lost almost 1400 votes, and Greens Senator Scott Ludlam’s team found ‘hundreds’ of misplaced votes during the recount. This, combined with the slim margins in some portions of the count, called the overall WA Senate election into doubt.

Murdoch University Senior Politics Lecturer Dr Ian Cook called in to discuss the ramifications of a re-run.
