RTRFM’s local music love-in IN THE PINES returns to the striking sounds of UWA’s Somerville Auditorium for its 23rd edition, featuring 20 of Perth’s best across two stages.

Perth punk is KIM SALMON. He’s this city’s original, with CV reads like the history of punk in Australia – The Scientists, Beasts of Bourbon, The Exterminators, The Cheap Nasties, The Surrealists, Darling Downs. The list doesn’t end. The “godfather of grunge” label often applied to Salmon’s legacy is so ubiquitous it’s become a cliché, but it holds true; without him, there is no Mudhoney, Green River or Nirvana, no Seattle explosion, no alt-rock takeover. But Salmon never stopped writing, recording or touring, whether it be solo or with his myriad list of collaborators. Don’t miss this chance to see the legendary Kim Salmon at In the Pines for the first time.

After a whirlwind national tour, a support slot for Tim Rogers & the Bamboos, an appearance at Perth Festival’s flagship HOME concert and a set by the ocean at the Maritime Museum at Harbour Sundays, GRACE BARBÉ AFRO-KREOL will make her debut on the Pines stage. Hailing from the island of Seychelles in the Indian Ocean, Barbé boasts one of the most diverse sounds in the state – nay, the country – marrying Afrobeat, reggae, rock and pop sensibilities into award-winning songs across two records, earning her a nod from WAM for Best World Act five years running.

There were few Perth bands in the 2000s more lush than RADARMAKER. Taking their name from a Mogwai track, the quartet threw post-rock, shoegaze and indie rock at the wall, and the sound that stuck was inimitable, dense and utterly compelling. Radarmaker played everywhere – from unfriendly bars with glass-throwing patrons to gallery spaces to the Hydey to Beck’s Music Box, where they supported post-rock pioneers Explosions in the Sky as a part of Perth International Arts Festival. Their return to In the Pines will be the first time Radarmaker have played live in 7 years.

THE WHEELERS OF OZ are a kaleidoscope of sonic delights. Featuring members of The Spunloves, The Durongs and Mt. Mountain, they’re a veritable super group of Perth psych. Their stellar debut, Revivalised – a local feature last year – is a sprawling, ambitious piece of work, running the gamete from 60s pop to classic, shimmering psychedelic to garage jams and all points between, best experienced in the flesh.

MERINDAS are Australia’s premiere soul outfit. Candice Lorrae & Kristel Kickett have performed sold-out shows around the country and in 2015 won the WAM Indigenous Song of the Year with their first single, Ready to Love. On the Pines stage, they’ll be joined by Jaime Maika, Dee Jones and acclaimed guitarist Guy Ghouse.

FAT SPARROW is a five-headed chameleon of divergent jazz experimentation and smooth, intoxicating meditations. Their eponymous debut released last year is winding odyssey of smooth, relaxing numbers paired with unnerving twists and turns, and we’re thrilled to welcome them to Somerville.

The BENJAMIN WITT BAND is an anomaly. After years logging time in The Chemist, Witt went solo, releasing the beautiful and mysterious AUDIO_ILLOGICAL BACKYARD DOG – a mix of found sounds, lo-fi folk odysseys and bedroom-recorded masterpieces. Witt’s latest single, Dead Fish – which premiered on Breakfast with Caitlin last week – sees him teaming up with Katy Steele and former Chemist co-conspirator Chris Wright (Methyl Ethel) for the first taste of a new LP titled Future Reset. We can’t wait to welcome Benjamin Witt Band to the Somerville stage.

After almost a decade of playing solo and even more time spent in punk and garage bands, Hayley Beth has adopted a new moniker: HEEBIEJEEBIES. The Price On Your Head is the first taste of a forthcoming album, and it’s an utterly haunting taste of what’s to come. Rendered live, HEEBIEJEEBIES is genre-defying, bitterly dark and completely entrancing.

Throw a dash of Sleater-Kinney, a touch of Bikini Kill, a pinch of surf, a healthy topping of melody and a whole lot of attitude and you get HUSSY, a stellar punk/blues/garage-pop quintet and another act who’ll be making their In the Pines debut this April.

After a tumultuous journey across the Nullarbor and back, complete with vehicular breakdown, outback cooking and a Frozen Ocean reunion, Midland’s favourite son PETER BIBBY makes his In the Pines debut under his solo moniker.

If you’re looking for something a little heavier, cast your ears towards the intoxicating doomgaze of SKULLCAVE. Featuring members of the Novocaines and PUCK, Skullcave have spent the last 12 months blowing eardrums alongside such heavyweights as High on Fire, The Devil Rides Out and Tangled Thoughts of Leaving. Last year’s Climbing EP is one of the best local metal releases in years.

There aren’t many bands who write an earworm like TIRED LION. The vocal melody on Desperate, the swirling guitars on Suck, the bassline on I Don’t Think You Like Me – every song they write refuses to leave your head. With international tours on the horizon, don’t miss this chance to see Tired Lion on a Perth stage before they scurry off around the world.

As if bucket weren’t enough for your mid-90s fix, feast your ears on the return of casio-powered indie rock wonders TURNSTYLE. After reuniting for the 20th edition of In the Pines back in 2013, Turnstyle decided they weren’t done yet, and in late 2015 they released their first record in well over a decade – the stellar Time Equals Function. We’re so excited to welcome back the new and improved Turnstyle to the Somerville stage.

After a near-15 year hiatus shoegaze / grunge / indie rock / frankly brilliant Perth outfit BUCKET make their long-awaited return to the stage. Bucket were a staple of this city’s musical landscape in the mid-90s, marrying Dinosaur Jr.-esque riffage with Swervedriver-like lush guitar tones and sublime songwriting on two stellar releases – 1994’s Flounder and 1995’s Muddle.

Fresh off the heels of a national tour in support of his debut album, City West, DAVEY CRADDOCK & THE SPECTACLES will finally grace the Somerville stage with a sublime mélange of alt-country, folk and soulful rock ‘n’ roll.

On the other side of the spectrum, brace for a sonic walloping from HELTA SKELTA who’ve just returned from a US jaunt, plus rabblerousing psych-punk trio THE PISSEDCOLAS.

JONI IN THE MOON ruled the airwaves last year with tracks like War and Porn & Tarantella – it’s only fitting that we’ll be treated to those freak-pop oddities in the surrounds of Somerville’s pines.

And adding to the amazing list of locals who made waves in 2015 is Big Splash winner 2015, alt-folk darling and blue-eyed wunderkind JACOB DIAMOND, alongside fellow Australiana-tinged alt-folk oddities VERGE COLLECTION.
