Understorey: French Nuclear Servitude

When public health researcher Annie Thébaud-Mony refused the highest order of merit in France, the National Order of the Legion of Honour, she drew attention to the French government's inaction on occupational safety, its neglect of the dangers of pesticides and asbestos in workplaces, and particularly the health problems associated with radiation exposures in nuclear power plants.   Her research for workplace justice suggests that the French authorities' one-time disregard for Chernobyl impacts shows itself now in a refusal to act on workers' health in France's ageing nuclear industry. Understorey discovers that most routine maintenance of nuclear equipment in France is left to vulnerable subcontractors, exposing them to short bursts of high levels of radiation that are annualised to be "safe". (Photo: Yann Forget, Creative Commons 3.0) French Nuclear Servitude
