Understorey: Lucas Heights – New Nuclear Lows

Australia has chosen to not go down the path of nuclear energy.  There are many reasons for this, including expense as well as risks to public health and environmental concerns.  However, there is one nuclear medical facility south of Sydney, Lucas Heights, which goes largely unnoticed in the nuclear debate.  Last year Lucas Heights took the title for worst global nuclear incident of 2017.  A worker was harmed and an investigation and a review followed.  That review has revealed Lucas Heights has an ongoing problem with managing safety, made worse by significant workplace bullying, and the outdated facilities need to be replaced, and the culture transformed.  (Photo: original reactor, 1958, public domain)
