  • As well as our feature albums, be sure to check out our weekly Sound Selection for the hottest new and forthcoming tunes.

This week's featured artists are @ponderers/ @bananagun_bananagram / @tinariwen / @maxblackwakeup / @octoocta / @chazzybelt / @aamatheson_ / @darrencrossband / @salamirosejoelouis / @embr_dnb / @tinfoilfronts x @jambaxtersmb / @kimletgordon / Senate / @angelolsenmusic
  • This week's local feature album is Concrete from The Community Chest.

A decade since the foundations were laid for @commchest band as a solo project of Turnstyle frontman Adem K, the project has since become a fully-fledged band and have followed up their 2015 EP Make Your Decisions Now And Live With It Forever with their new EP Concrete. Concrete sees the band take a slightly more subdued, exploratory and intriguing approach to their take on indie-rock meets synth-pop, as they lyrically explore themes of history, travel, fear and joy. Across the EP's five tracks, the band utilise spacious arrangements to give all elements room to breathe, with catchy analogue synth-leads meeting big guitar hooks and sing-a-long inducing choruses, resulting in a snappy, catchy listen from start to finish.
  • This week's RTRFM feature album is The Return from @sampa_the_great.

Born in Zambia and spending her formative years between there and Botswana, Sampa the Great found herself in Sydney in her early 20s, quickly meeting like-minded musos at weekly hip-hop and jazz nights, an influence that very quickly led her to releasing early singles of conscious hip-hop meets spirited neo-soul sounds, culminating in the Australian Music Prize-winning Birds and the Bee9 mixtape in 2017 - a release that left us wondering just how much greater she can get, and she's back with her epic debut album, The Return, to show us. Her new album is the result of four years of both personal and musical soul-searching, as she returned home to Zambia for inspiration, which shines through both in the album's lyrical themes of self-identity and diaspora, while elements from African kwaito music shines through, amongst the album's production combining boom-bap hip-hop, soul and R&B. At the end of the day, the main focus is Sampa's incredible rapping, which spans multiple languages, and is always smooth, commanding, clever and profound. On The Return, Sampa the Great has solidified her position as one of the country (and world's) most exciting MCs, with a record that is always looking forward, while remaining rooted in the cultures, people and sounds that shaped her.
  • This Friday September 20, RTRFM 92.1 will disrupt our regular programming to join the millions of people across the globe taking urgent action for our planet.

Our house is on fire — let’s act like it. This is not business as usual.

RTRFM 92.1 is participating in the Global Climate Strike action in the best way possible, with a special live broadcast from the Perth Cultural Centre (outside PICA). Breakfast presenter Taylah Strano will be interviewing arts and cultural workers fighting for climate action ahead of the rally. You can join us outside PICA from 10am before we march as one towards Forrest Place.

We invite everyone to participate in this global action calling on governments and corporations to take immediate and long lasting action on climate change.

If you can not make it to the strike, stay tuned to the Sound Alternative.

From 11am until 2pm we will hear from artists, activists and Global Climate Strikers as we discuss how we can change the future for our young people.

Our office will also be shut for the day. Radiothon prizes can be collected on Saturday!
