“A Permanent Hangover”: The Plight of the Flat Faced Dogs

Let’s face it, pug nosed dogs are cute.  British Bull Dogs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and a whole host of concave nosed canines are characterised by protruding tongues and hurried snuffling. On the surface its endearing stuff, with registrations of French bulldogs increasing around 3000% in the last decade.

But it's these  pugish little snouts that result in particular susceptibility to something called BOAS or  Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome.

Professor of Veterinary Science at The University of Sydney, Professor Paul Mcgreevy joined Jane Hebiton on The Mag to discuss the butterfly effect of breeding for aesthetics.
