A Woman Like Betty

Tuesday 23rd October / presented by Caitlin Nienaber

In 1962, a sixteen year-old Detroit girl named Betty Haskins recorded a single with a local record producer.

It got picked up by Atlantic Records and led to a tour with RnB musicians Ben E King, Barbara Lynn and Otis Redding.

Since then she’s changed her name, recorded dozens of albums, been on broadway and emerged as a legend of soul.

But it’s been a long and difficult road – it’s only in the past decade that her career has really flourished.

Her latest album Thankful and Thoughtful and autobiography A Woman Like Me mark fifty years in the music industry.

Bettye LaVette joined Caitlin Nienaber on Breakfast and Caitlin asked her how she chooses the songs she covers.
