Abbott’s Womanless Cabinet

Thursday 19th September / presented by Jonny Hopper

Continuing with the reaction to the announcement of Tony Abbott’s frontbench, and the decision to include Julie Bishop as the only woman in cabinet and one of just six in the 42-strong ministry has sparked much debate.

Senior Liberal MP Bronwyn Bishop has defended the line-up, saying women must be chosen on merit, and in time several female backbenchers will be in line for promotion.

Women on Boards is a company created to improve the gender balance on Australian boards.

Co-founder and Executive Director Claire Braund disagrees with the Liberal party’s merit-based selection policy.

She argues affirmative action must be implemented or else more of the same will happen at the next election.
