Alphabet Street – Albums – S

Thursday 27th November / presented by Adam Trainer Peter Barr

It’s a new day and we have a new way as we charge towards the end of the year we still have a long way to go down our street of songs, our avenue of albums, as we meander musically towards the end.

This time it’s the letter T…

A is for Abraxas, for Santana’s classic 1970 Latin Rock sound.

B is for Bad Brains, the harrowing and surprising self-titled album of some DC Rastafarians.

C is for Cut, The Slits 1979 Post-Punk debut album, ripping it up and starting again.

D is for Different Class, Pulps 1995 album, championing the cultural class.

E is for Entroducing, DJ Shadow’s amazing trip into samples and beats.

F is for Farside Virtual, James Ferraro’s trip into the world of vapourwave.

G is for Goat, from The Jesus Lizard and their most acclaimed touched by the Albini flame.

H is for Horses, Patti Smith’s debut from 1975 encased in a memorable album artwork.

I is for It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, Public Enemy’s battle cry for social equality.

J is for Journey in Satachidananda, free form wonder by Alice Coltrane.

K is for Kollaps, from Einstürzende Neubauten, full of custom-built instruments and natural occurring noises.

L is for Low, multi-medium inspired album by David Bowie also known as ‘The Man Who Fell to Earth’.

M is for My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, by Brian Eno and David Byrne, with sampled sounds that include actual religious recordings and commercial radio DJ’s, this album preaches the sounds of the new religion: Capitalism.

N is for Naked City John Zorn’s avant-garde masterpiece.

O is for The Dirty Three’s masterpiece Ocean Song.

P is for Bjork’s third album and perhaps most defining, Post.

Q is for The Queen Is Dead, The Smiths look into the bleak world of 80′s England.

R is for Jane’s Addiction breakthrough second record Ritual de lo Habitual.

S is for Sketches of Spain by the late great Miles Davis. Jazz without our comparison.
