An End to HIV in WA?

For the first time in 30 years, an end to HIV is on the cards in Australia - without a cure or vaccine being discovered.

It’s World AIDS Awareness Week.

As part of this, the WA Aids Council has revealed new strategies, taking advantage of greater knowledge about the virus that can lead to AIDS.

There’s three key messages - sexually active people with multiple partners should seek regular testing.

If diagnosed, treatment should begin early because this maintains health and greatly reduces the risk of onward transmission.

And, it’s important to maintain safe behaviours, such as wearing condoms.

If it’s not on, it’s still not on.

The new strategies are needed - WA has experienced an increase in diagnoses over the last decade, and faces some particular challenges.

WA AIDS Council CEO Andrew Burry joined Jonny Hopper to discuss World AIDS Awareness Week and these new strategies…
