Anniversary of Australia’s Global Internet

Tuesday 25th June / presented by Teri Campbell

Australia joined the global internet on June 23rd, 1989.

At the time the internet had been developing for twenty years with the first connection being made in the United States in 1969. However it was not at all like the internet of today, being used mostly by researchers and computer scientist. The online community as we know it was virtually non-existent, and they were no online streaming services. In fact the first international link provided just fifty-six kilobits of national connectivity, not even enough to stream a single piece of music.

Today over eighty-six percent of Australian households are connected to the internet. With the vast majority of people carrying smart devices that connect them directly to the global internet on the go. This was barely imaginable thirty years ago when the University of Melbourne first connected Australia to the global internet.

Pro-Vice Chancellor from the School of Computing at the University of Melbourne, Professor Justin Zobel talks with Teri Campbell about the massive transformation that the internet in Australia has undergone in the last thirty years.
