Archaelogists Debunk First People Myth

Monday 29th June / presented by Chris Wheeldon

The popular belief is Aboriginal people were the first peoples of Australia, a civilization 40,000 years in the making. But is this the case?

Liberal Democrat Leader David Leyonhjelm says he needs to be persuaded that Aboriginal people should be recognised as the first Australians.

His view is based on the Bradshaw or Gwion Gwion rock paintings in Western Australia, which some amateur anthropologists in the 1990s theorised were painted by a different ethnic group to Aboriginal Australians.

This has resulted in criticism by archaeologists, who say there’s no credible evidence to back Leyonhjelm’s comments.

Archaeologist and biological anthropologist from Griffith University, Dr Michael Westaway was here to discuss the implication of such views.
