Bec Bradley joins to discuss Spare Parts Puppet Theatre’s upcoming performance of Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge

The Perth powerhouse, Spare Parts Puppet Theatre is back with a new performance, celebrating the 40th anniversary of a favourite Aussie story, Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge, authored by Mem Fox and illustrated by Julie Vivas.

Director of the show, Bec Bradley, joins On The Record to discuss the creative process behind the performance and what it means to see the performance finally blossom. Bec mentions that during the pre-production she discovered that the story was very close to the hearts of so many people she knew and some would reminisce and say “Ah I remember that book from when I was in school” or “I used to read that to my children”. Bec and co-creator Michael Barlow, reflected on author Mem Fox’s magical touch and ability to teach people the craft of making and sharing memories and during pre-production were charmed by a viewing of Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds and identified how necessary it was for this to be a work for both the elderly and the young, celebrating that connection.

Bradley has been a member of Spare Parts since 2005 and recognised that having been there for a while allowed them to see the clarity of the show and how performances of it displays bravery, confidence and the importance of stepping outside of your comfort zone. Adults in the audience are able to step up and participate in the show, creating a sense of interactivity and allowing the children attending to see the fun of theatre and significance of trying something new.

The show begins Saturday 30 March, playing at the Ellie Eaton Theatre in Claremont.
