Nauru Couple Seek Acceptance

Thursday 17th March / presented by Paul Van Lieshout Hunt

In Nauru being gay is a crime, and in Iran being gay is punishable by death. This is the plight faced by couple Nima and Ashkan who fled Iran and are now refugees in Australia.

The couple are seeking asylum, but Australia’s refugee policy has seen them subjected to violent homophobic attacks on the streets of Nauru.

To highlight this injustice, a giant billboard circled Parliament House recently, with the words ‘Bring Them Here’. The campaign was crowd-funded by the international LGBTI group, All Out.

Human Rights Law Centre, Director of Advocacy and Litigation, Anna Brown joins Paul Van Lieshout Hunt to chat about this and our detention system.
