Border Force Act Rally

Monday 20th July / presented by Chris Wheeldon

Health and social workers in the Manus and Nauru detention centres are faced with a difficult and unfair choice. New legislation could see those who work for the Department of Immigration face up to two years jail if they disclose information while doing their job.

Perth teachers and medical professionals gathered in their hundreds at Parliament House on Saturday, 18 July 2015 to hold a silent protest against the recently imposed federal Border Force Act, in the hope of supporting the medical staff of detention centres around the country.

The Act, backed by Abbott and Labor, focuses heavily on confidentiality, with the threat of up to two years in jail if healthcare workers or teachers working in detention centres reveal classified information.

Dr Katy Algie from Midwest Aero Medical Services has worked in Immigration Detention Centres as a nurse and was one of the four major organisers of the protest.

Dr Algie joined Chris Wheeldon on The Mag.
