Call For Establishment of a New National Park

Wednesday 26th April / presented by Paul Hunt

If enough interest and cash is raised, WA could get a new national park.

It’s not a new cause Scientists have been calling for the protection of the area since 1980.

It’s the Helena and Aurora Range one of the most significant biodiversity assets in Australia.

Home to thousands of plant, bird and animal species, it’s in danger due to its untapped iron-ore deposits the banded ironstone formations, or BIF.

Mining company, Mineral Resources LTD, wants to develop the range into two, open cut iron ore mines, affecting roughly four kilometers of the area.

WA’s Wilderness Society wants to turn it into a new national park.

Its State Director Jenita Enevoldsen spoke to Paul on The Mag.
