Climate Extinction

Tuesday 21st June / presented by Rewi Lyall

You’ve probably never seen a Bramble Cay melomys – and unfortunately, now you probably never will.

The little Australian rodent has landed in the spotlight recently after researchers at the University of Queensland published a report on the species’ extinction.

While it’s by no means the first mammal to go extinct in recent history, the melomys has received a lot of extra attention for a particular reason: It’s the first mammal to made extinct by human-caused climate change.

Dr. Luke Leung, one of the the authors of the report, came into the studio discuss his findings.
