Great Barrier Oil

Thursday 12th December / posted by Chris Wheeldon

The Federal Government has sparked outrage and anger from conservationists and Greens alike.

It’s given the go-ahead to create one of the world’s largest coal ports near the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

Although the Queensland Government has been assured that new plans will be put in place to protect the long-term future of the reef, around three million cubic metres of dredge spoil will need to be dumped near the reef in order for the expansion of the coal port to take place.

Campaigners have described the planned expansion as ‘damaging and short-sighted’.

The Australian Marine Conservation Society’s Great Barrier Reef Campaign Director Felicity Wishart is one of them, listen to what she had to say on the matter this morning…
