Community In Protest Against ‘Poverty Porn’

Thursday 7th May / posted by Chris Wheeldon

Did you tune into Struggle Street on SBS on Wednesday night?

The series has been dubbed ‘poverty porn’ for its depiction of Mount Druitt residents.

This week, 10 garbage trucks from Blacktown City Council protested outside the SBS studios with the mayor, calling for it not to be aired.

Struggle Street spotlights vulnerable communities and it’s this ‘misrepresentation’ the community is up in arms about.

University of Melbourne Social Political Sciences and Political Sciences Senior Lecturer, Dr Lauren Rosewarne, joiner Paul Van Leishout Hunt on The Mag to talk about the ethics of TV shows.
