Diabetes Research Leading Into Exercise

Wednesday 20th March / presented by Fiona Bartholomaeus

Curtin University researchers are trying to find a way to overcome barriers to physical activity so people living with type 1 diabetes can confidently achieve their physical activity goals.

Physical activity is often recommended to people living with type 1 diabetes, as it may help reduce the risk of long-term complications, improve insulin requirements and improve general well-being.

Unfortunately, physical activity can often result in hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) for people living with type 1 diabetes, as the symptoms of dizziness, rapid heart rate, loss of coordination, confusion, shaking, weakness, difficulty speaking and at times, loss of consciousness and seizures, are cause for concern for diabetes sufferers.

Curtin University School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedicine PhD Student Marian Brennan spoke to RTRFM about her research in partnership with Diabetes WA.
