‘Diaita’ – The Ancient Wellness Plan

‘Health is wealth’ – a well known proverb that signifies how fundamental well-being is for a fulfilling life.

In ancient times, this was taken more literally. Greeks and Romans viewed physical vitality as a reflection of their discipline, character and overall status in society. Our word “diet” comes from the ancient Greek word diaita, referring to what we eat and drink, but it could also refer to our lifestyle as a whole – including exercise, sleep, sex and other activities.

Ancient doctors did not just tell patients what to eat and drink. They also advised them on what sorts of other activities they should be doing, like exercising or even going to the theatre.

Atikah Hurley is joined by Lecturer in Classics and Ancient History, Dr Konstantine Panegryes to talk more about the topic of ancient health and diet on On The Record.
