e-DNA Pollinator Detection

New research at Curtin University has used environmental DNA or e-DNA to examine the interactions of animal and insect pollinators with native, flowering plants.

The new research examined DNA traces left by animal pollinators left on native flora and identified both insect and animal pollinators on multiple flowering plants. The study identified 57 arthropods, 8 bird species and 5 mammals including the western pygmy possum.

Will Yagmich spoke with Josh Newton, a PHD candidate at Curtin’s School of Molecular and Life Sciences about this recent discovery.
