First Sounds: an initiative for First Nation music

Wednesday 30th October / presented by Jackson Hawdon Will Backler

The Community Broadcasting Association of Australia's Australian Music Radio Airplay Project (AMRAP) has been crucial for community radio broadcasters and Australian musicians for over 20 years by ensuring more local sounds are heard across the country. AMRAP has recently received funding from the Australia Council for the Arts and is excited to partner with First Nations Media Australia on a new initiative to distribute new music from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander musicians, raising the profile of First Nations music by helping to share their songs and stories.

First Sounds is being launched next week and will provide a platform for emerging First Nations artists that aren't established to allow them to have their music played and shared. These artists can upload their music to indigiTUBE, a platform for sharing Indigenous media content, which will be reviewed quarterly by a selection panel of First Nations individuals. Tracks will be selected to go onto a series of compilations which be distributed to community radio stations, creating greater awareness of indigenous heritage songs and stories and also awareness for artists that these pathways exist for them to get their music out there.

Jackson and Will were joined by AMRAP Manager Andrew Khedoori during Out To Lunch where Andrew discussed this exciting new project the value that it will bring to both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and community radio broadcasters.
