FITTER | HAPPIER: LGBTI Health

Thursday 20th July / presented by Chris Mason

This week on Fitter Happier we examined LGBTI health.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex and other sexuality, sex and gender diverse people make up a significant part of Australian society, but unfortunately the people in this community also experiences significantly poorer mental health and higher rates of suicide than other Australians.

The elevated risk of these challenges among isn’t due to sexuality, sex or gender identity but rather discrimination and exclusion as key determinants of health, often referred to as minority stress.

Exposure to and fear of discrimination and isolation can directly impact on people’s mental health, causing stress, psychological distress and potentially suicide.

Jane Armstrong and Jules Spears from the Mental Health Nursing Centre at the Royal Perth Bentley Group joined Chris to talk about the need to raise awareness and increase access to help for the LGBTI community.
